D.C. Police have made an arrest in connection to the death of a man whose body was found burning in a trash can in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast D.C. a couple weeks ago.

Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier announced that authorities have arrested 19-year-old Zakias Blanding this morning in connection to the homicide.

The body of 19-year-old Heineken McNeil, burned beyond recognition, was discovered by a neighbor just after 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23. After the body was extinguished, the Chief Medical Examiner determined that McNeil had died from gunshot wounds and declared his death a homicide.

“We are especially concerned and focused on how to prevent violent crime and homicides,” Bowser said at today’s press conference. McNeil’s body was discovered in an abandoned property in the Trinidad neighborhood that was once set to become luxury condos, but those plans were abandoned. Bowser also said that there’s going to be an increased police presence in that area.
