Montgomery County Police announced that they have charged an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old in the shooting death of Eric Melgar, 20, at the Wheaton Metro station last night.

Police responded to reports of shorts fired at 7:06 p.m.on the third level of the station’s parking garage. Melgar, of Silver Spring, was taken to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Douglas Chase and Brent Sanderson have been charged with first degree murder, according to police. The motive, what the victim and suspects were doing at the garage, and whether they knew each other are unclear.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim and the suspects were involved in a confrontation before one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and began firing. The suspects then fled the garage on foot, according to police. A firearm was recovered from one of the suspects.

Police arrested Chase and Sanderson on the scene last night. They are currently being held without bond.

It remains an active investigation, police spokeswoman Lt. Jennifer McNeal said this afternoon. The parking garage is located on George Avenue near the Westfield Wheaton shopping mall.
