>> Baltimore’s Orchester Praževica plays high energy music that comes from the traditions of Eastern European Czardas and Gypsy Swing, but also with a heavy dose of jazz and blues. The band will be at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge tonight along with The Harry Bells, a horn driven calypso ensemble under the direction of saxophonist Matt Rippetoe. 10 p.m. Tickets $5.
>> Cecily is a talented young vocalist whose music spans a number of genres. She will pay tribute to Chocolate City during her sets on Thursday at Bohemian Caverns, mixing original compositions with songs by Duke Ellington, Roberta Flack, Gil Scott-Heron, and others. 7:30 and 9 p.m. sets. >> A legend of Nigerian music, Orlando Julius, plays classic Afrobeat with a psychedelic twist. His band will be at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club on Thursday. 8 p.m. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Vocalist Gabbie McGee plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley on Thursday. Tickets $25 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Joe Herrera is among the most active trumpeters on the local scene. He will lead his band, the Landscaping Crew, on Thursday at Dukem Jazz. The group includes guitarist Rodney Richardson, an area mainstay who left for a stint in Chicago and recently returned to D.C. 9 p.m. to midnight. No cover.
>> Vocalist Heidi Martin combines poetry, songs and monologues in ABBEY!, a tribute to Abbey Lincoln, the late, renowned jazz vocalist, songwriter, actress and civil rights advocate. The one woman show runs Thursday to Saturday at the Atlas. 8 p.m. Tickets $25.
>> Cuban/Venezuelan piano virtuoso César Orozco comes to the Montpelier Arts Center on Friday for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets $25.
>> Lionel Lyles approaches music with a hard charging swing that recalls classic sounds from the hard bop and early post-bop eras. The saxophonist brings his quintet to Bohemian Caverns on Friday for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $18 in advance/$23 at the door.
>> Mr. Henry’s hosts vocalists Aaron Myers (Friday) and Kim Scudera (Saturday). 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.
>> Benito Gonzalez took the D.C. jazz scene by storm in the early 2000s when he moved to this area from his native Venezuela. He moved to New York several years ago, leading his own bands and playing with a number of jazz greats, but he still pays regular visits to our fair city. Gonzalez will play Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Over 20 years have passed since Danny Gatton took his own life. The master guitarist was respected throughout the world and was a local legend who always shied away from the fame that he so deserved. The Birchmere and an all-star lineup will celebrate Gatton’s life on Saturday. The show is sold out, but find a way to go if you can.
>> The Airmen of Note is the premiere jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force. The outfit is performing free monthly concerts this fall at The Clarice on UMD’s campus. The first of the series takes place on Saturday and features vibraphonist Stefon Harris as a guest soloist. 8 p.m.
>> The Creative Music series at Union Arts continues on Saturday with the free playing of multi-reedists Evan Parker and Ned Rothenberg. 8 p.m. Tickets $15.
>> Chaise Lounge performs a brand of easy going, yet sophisticated jazz that was made popular by Capitol Records in the early ’60s. The band will be at AMP on Saturday to celebrate its new album, Gin Fizz Fandango. 8 p.m. Tickets $30-$40.
>> The Thing is one of the most important and hardest working free jazz groups in Europe, constantly touring the world. The trio will visit Bohemian Caverns on Sunday. 7 and 8:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 in advance/$20 at the door.
>> Saxophonist Nathan Hook made waves in his native Austin before making the trip east to New York. He is now continuing his studies at the esteemed Peabody Conservatory and will make the trip down 95 on Sunday to play Twins Jazz. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> I’m sure everyone is aware that the Landmark Festival takes place this weekend. The official after party for Saturday’s events takes place at The Hamilton and features the bhangra brass band, Red Baraat. 10 p.m. Tickets $15-$20.
>> Brad Linde is one of the busiest voices on the local jazz scene. In addition to co-directing the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra and producing many of the jazz performances at the Atlas, he also leads several distinct ensembles under his own name. Linde concludes his run as September’s artist-in-residence at Bohemian Caverns on Tuesday. 7:30 and 9 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 in advance/$15 at the door.
