Monday

Destroyer, Jennifer Castle @ 9:30 Club. 7pm $20. All ages, accessible venue.

Dan Bejar has been making records as Destroyer since 1996. Never one to repeat himself or follow trends, he has amassed a dedicated fan base willing to read into each lyric of his warped poetry. Bejar is currently touring his tenth record Poison Season, a record with high expectations. His last album, 2011’s Kaputt, was one his most critically acclaimed and commercially accepted records. While not a retread of Kaputt’s yacht-rock styling, Poison Season keeps the horns and the grey palate proving it is a worthy successor and another gem in arguably one of the best discographies in indie rock.

Wednesday

Pure Bathing Culture, Wild Ones @ DC9 8:30pm $12. All ages, inaccessible venue.

Pop duo Pure Bathing Culture are set to have a big year with the release of their second record, Pray For Rain, on October 23rd. Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman’s take on 80’s synth-pop is catchy and sweet but has an edge most of the band’s contemporaries don’t. Pray For Rain is a giant leap for the band with two big singles, “Pray for Rain” and “Palest Pearl.” See the band now before they get even bigger.

>>U Street Music Hall: Autechre, Cygnus, Rob Hall 9pm $20. 18+, accessible venue.

>>453: Teen Mom, Yairms, Rom 7pm Donations Accepted. All ages, see link for accessibility details.

Thursday

Kurt Vile and the Violators, Waxahatchee, Luke Roberts @ 9:30 Club 7pm $25. All ages, accessible venue.

Kurt Vile has been making the same record for years—and that isn’t a bad thing. His songwriting chops are enviable. This year’s b’lieve i’m goin down is no exception, another twelve song collection of laid back acoustic and electric jams. Vile’s tour mate, Katie Crutchfield, is also having a big year. Her band Waxhatchee released the great Ivy Tripp on her new label Merge. As a stacked bill, I cannot recommend this show more.

>>Black Cat:Saintsenca, The Sidekicks, Yowler 7:30pm $12. All ages, accessible venue.

>>Howard Theatre: Big Daddy Kane, Rakim 8pm $29.50 – $60. All ages, accessible venue.

Friday

Korn, Suicide Silence, Islander @ Fillmore Silver Spring 7:30pm $49.50. All ages, accessible venue.

Twenty one years ago the heavens opened up and delivered the first album by the nu-metal band Korn. Korn kept on chugging, flirting with mainstream success and Grammy’s before shuttling off to the fringes with dedicated fans. Now the band are playing their first record in its entirety including the closing track “Daddy” which until this tour had never been performed. Say what you will about Korn, but the first record still rocks pretty hard.

>>DC9: Matthew Friedberger, Teen Liver 6:30 PM $12. All ages, inaccessible venue

Saturday

Lower Dens, Beverly @ Rock and Roll Hotel 7pm Free with RSVP. 21+, accessible venue.

Baltimore’s Lower Dens used take psychedelic krautrock to new levels, but the band’s latest release, Escape From Evil, saw the band ditch guitars for synthesizers. While still with one foot in rock, Evil, is a capital P pop record. Though the inspiration is from the ’80s Lower Dens focus on queer topics rather than the same old stale topics. The show is free, so if you have the time this is definitely a concert to attend.

>>U Street Music Hall: Lissie, Tyler Lyle, Chase Cohl 7pm $20. All ages, accessible venue.

>>Fillmore Silver Spring: Joey Bada$$, Denzel Curry, Bishop Nehru, Nyck Caution 8pm $22. All ages, accessible venue.

Sunday

Electric Six, Yip Deceiver @ Black Cat 7:30 $15. All ages, accessible venue

It has been twelve years since Detroit rockers Electric Six took us to a “Gay Bar” and declared a “fire in the Taco Bell.” In that time the Electric Six have released another eleven (yes, eleven!!!) albums of butt rock including two this year, Mimicry and Memories in March and the awfully titled Bitch, Don’t Let Me Die last week. Though their music may be a joke, they are a capable and fun live band.
