Obtaining campaign donations has always required a bit of a hard sell. While some are willing to fork over their hard earned dollars because of genuine belief in a candidate, most high rollers expect something tangible in return: a gala invitation perhaps, or maybe a night in the Lincoln bedroom. Not exactly the sort of rewards that are offered to your average campaign contributor. One intrepid soul has decided to bridge that gap though, and offer an incentive that even Joe the Plumber (or maybe Joe the Mandalorian) could appreciate: a full showing of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
For $250, D.C.-based supporters of a Washington congressman can snag some of the first seats to the film at private screening the Regal Cinemas at Gallery Place, Buzzfeed reports.
Derek Kilmer (D-Wash) is, to put it lightly, a bit of a Star Wars aficionado, and he’s not afraid to show it. While many of us are afraid to air our secret undying love for The Greatest Story Ever Told, Kilmer flies his Rebel Alliance freak flag pretty high.
This is not the first time Kilmer has incorporated Star Wars into his political engine. He’s hosted a Star Wars trivia night fundraiser for the past three years, and his whole family is pretty wrapped into the culture:
You could say that the Kilmer family is excited for the Star Wars trailer debut tonight #TheForceAwakens

All things considered, it’s not a bad idea. When tickets went on sale following the airing of the official trailer, the internet promptly broke both Fandango and movietickets.com; tickets for opening night screenings are already being sold on ebay.
One does have to wonder though whether Kilmer’s fundraiser is truly about raising money, or if it’s just a thinly veiled attempt to host a pretty baller private screening for the latest installment of his favorite franchise. Regardless, it’s hard to fault him. May the Force be with you, Representative Kilmer.
