Starting on November 7, the D.C. Public Library System will be down two libraries. The Chevy Chase and the Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park branches are shuttering their doors, for two and four months respectively, to spruce things up.

So what exactly constitutes a library makeover?

At Chevy Chase (5625 Connecticut Avenue NW), the $650,000 worth of work will go toward: “new flooring; fresh paint; new furniture; new seating area by windows to take advantage of natural light; power outlets at all reader tables for customers; Computers, copiers and express computers consolidated in a single area; a larger and more welcoming Teen Space featuring four MAC computers and additional seating.”

And at the 25-year-old Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park Library (7420 Georgia Ave. NW), the $1.1 million-worth of work will mostly go toward the first and second floors (with minor work on the lower level), including “new flooring; new furniture; power outlets at all reader tables for customers; a new teen area on the first floor; new conference rooms; and new study rooms. Exterior work on the roof and on improving building drainage will also happen during the refresh.”

While the facilities are closed, Chevy Chase Library users can pick up holds from the Tenley Library and Shepherd Park Library users are directed to pick up holds from the Takoma Park Library.

One of the last events at Chevy Chase before the closure will be a talk on Mapping Segregation in Washington DC. The free event takes place at 7 p.m. tonight,
