A D.C. woman was arrested today for allegedly beating her 6-pound Yorkshire Terrier mix. Kristina Washington, a resident of Savannah Terrace, also failed to provide her one-year-old dog, Roxie, with necessary medical care, according to the Washington Humane Society.

The organization learned of the abuse in late October and sent over an officer, who found Roxie “barely able to move as a result of what appeared to be suspicious injuries,” the organization said. Roxie was transported to a vet in Bowie, Md. for emergency treatment. In critical condition, vets didn’t expect her to last the night.

Among her injuries were multiple skull fractures, approximately 11 spinal fractures, four fractures to the ribs, five limb fractures, and numerous fractures in her left rear foot, according to a release. She went on to make a full recovery thanks to the “heroic efforts of her medical team,” the organization said.

“In her short life, she has seen so much pain and suffering”, said Scott Giacoppo of WHS. “This case is just heartbreaking.”

Medics are now keeping a close eye on Roxie, who underwent two surgical repairs. Meanwhile, the cost of her medical care continues to rise in the tens of thousands of dollars. Those interested in offsetting costs can donate to the Saving Roxie fund.

The four full-time officers with the Washington Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement Department investigate more than 1,400 complaints of animal cruelty ever year, and they refer serious cases, like Roxie’s, to the United States Attorney’s Office.
