>> Lena Seikaly is one of the area’s finest vocalists and was one of three DMV jazz singers to be selected as a semi-finalist to the prestigious Monk International Jazz Competition. She will be performing on Thursday at Alexandria’s Carlyle Club. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Twins Jazz recently launched a jazz orchestra under the direction of trumpeter Thad Wilson that will play every other Thursday. 8 p.m. to midnight. Tickets $5 plus food/drink minimum.

>> Soulful saxophonist Tim Green‘s leads his band at Dukem Jazz on Thursday. 9 p.m. to midnight. No cover. 

>> A native of Italy, Roberta Gambarini is a jazz chanteuse in the most classic and timeless sense. She begins a four-night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley on Thursday. Gabarini will lead a wonderful band that includes pianist Cyrus Chestnut and heralded drummer Al Foster. Tickets $30-35 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Suricato is a jazz quintet out of Bogota, Colombia whose music can center around dream-like vocals, and then turn on a dime to focus on fuzzed out guitars and more avant-garde sounds. The band will play 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets on Thursday at Bohemian Caverns. Tickets $20 in advance/$25 at the door. For those who can’t make it to the Caverns, Suricato will play the free, but less intimate Millennium Stage on Friday. 6 p.m.

>> Jazz Night in Southwest hosts area vocalist Heidi Martin, who will bring a mix of music and spoken word to pay tribute to the great Abbey Lincoln, one of the most creative and outspoken figures in jazz history. 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets $5.

>> The U.S. Air Force’s Airmen of Note concludes its Jazz Heritage Series at The Clarice with a free 8 p.m. performance on Friday. Saxophonist Walt Weiskopf will be the featured soloist.

>> American University’s Katzen Arts Center will feature the AU Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Joshua Bayer, in concert along with a combo performance with Bayer and local notables including saxophonists Peter Fraize and Paul Carr. 8 p.m. Tickets $5-$10. 

>> The Creative Music series at Union Arts continues on Friday with a triple bill that features local solo multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin, Baltimore’s Time Toss and UVF Rays. 8:30 p.m. $10 suggested donation.

>> The Kennedy Center has enjoyed a long association with the internationally renowned vocalist, Carmen Lundy, who is a regular faculty member at the Center’s respected Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program. Lundy be at the KC Jazz Club on Friday and Saturday to celebrate her latest album, Soul To Soul. Her band will include Baltimore’s own Warren Wolf. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. Tickets $26-$39.

>> Trumpeter DeAndre Shaifer is a musical polymath. A fine jazz trumpeter who also holds his own on multiple other instruments, all while moonlighting under his electronic moniker, Dre King. Shaifer’s quartet will play 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. Tickets $15 in advance/$20 at the door.

>> Mr. Henry’s hosts Chuck Holden on Friday and Anita King with Dial 251 on Saturday. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

>> Aaron Walker is a journeyman drummer who has played with a number of noteworthy artists, including Gary Bartz, Nicholas Payton, and Buster Williams. Walker’s own ensemble will play 9 and 11 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> New Orleans vocalist/trumpeter Kermit Ruffins comes to The Hamilton on Saturday and will pay homage to jazz icon Louis Armstrong. Tickets $25.75-$30.25.

>> Organist Benjie Porecki will lead his band on Sunday at the Jazz and Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 cover.

>> Jerry Douglas is universally recognized as the finest dobro player working today. While he is normally associated with country and bluegrass acts, his solo material is far more wide reaching, drawing from jazz and international music in addition to Americana. Douglas and his band will perform on Sunday at The Birchmere. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $29.50.

>> Violinist Michal Urbaniak was a child prodigy in his native Poland. He discovered jazz and left the violin for a spell to perform as a saxophonist, eventually returning to his first love and moving to the United States. He has spent the past 20+ years creating a fusion sound that draws from a number of influences. Urbaniak’s eclectic style comes to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club on Sunday for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets $35 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Jeff Weintraub is an area baritone jazz vocalist who draws heavily from the Great American Songbook, but also from songwriters such as Dylan and Tom Waits. He and his band will play 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Sunday at Twins Jazz. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Things slow down after this weekend due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, so this is a great opportunity to remind folks of the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra‘s Monday night gigs at the historic club.
