Time is Fire, formed in 2014 and the band is already making waves across the city’s vibrant music scene. Today marks the release of the band’s self-titled EP on Electric Cowbell Records, bringing the group’s post-punk psychedelia to the masses.
The lead track from the EP is “Violence (Brings Violence),” a song that is unfortunately timely and relevant. “Joy brings joy and violence brings violence,” sings vocalist Kamyar Arsani, a Sufi poet of Iranian descent. “As you can see, all men are falling/What has become of our species/We have lost touch with humanity, sanity,” he continues. Arsani’s poetic lyrics match the band’s psychedelic funk-driven grooves and wailing guitars. “Violence” is the perfect introduction to this band and their new release, as it captures their high energy, experimental sound, which they describe as “weird world.”
Time is Fire’s music and compelling live presence are welcome additions to the aural landscape in D.C. This band also stands out because of the experience each member brings to the table. Guitarist Matt Perrone is formerly of Alma Tropicalia, a now-defunct psychedelic samba and funk band. Arsani’s intense and energetic on-stage presence is equally matched by Thievery Corporation bassist Ashish Vyas. Drummer Jim Thomson, an indie music veteran and proprietor of Electric Cowbell Records, has played with the likes of GWAR, Bio Ritmo, and CSC Funk Band.
Whether it’s their characteristically quirky sound or all-star personnel, Time Is Fire is a quintessential Washington, D.C. band with potential. They celebrate the release of their EP with a show at at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge on Tuesday, November 24th.
