A large group of ATV trucks and dirt bikes, which are banned on city streets, were spotted yesterday in NoMa. They were seen around 5 p.m. on Sunday, just blocks from the Capitol.

A reader first sent Popville this video. A number of commenters also reported seeing large groups of riders around the city.

The Arlington County Police Department received reports of ATVs and dirt bikes in the Rosslyn and Key Bridge areas last night, ARLnow reported, however, none of the riders were arrested.

The department also told ARLnow that they received a report of a dirt bike rider “who skidded into a light pole and utility box on the 2100 block of Washington Blvd, near Route 50. A Fort Myer firefighter who witnessed the crash told police that an ATV rider picked up the injured dirt bike rider and together they fled the scene.” The investigation into the crash is underway.

And according to the Washington Post, a man was killed in Prince George’s County just before 6 p.m. last night in a collision between an ATV and an SUV. The man was riding the ATV with a teenager who was critically injured.

The offense for operating ATV trucks and dirt bikes is a misdemeanor, with a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $250 fine.

In June, the D.C. Police union argued that these penalties aren’t enough. At the time, MPD reported 147 arrests of riders in the r15 months. But, excluding 11 juveniles and 18 pending cases, only 33 defendants were found guilty. And of those 33 people, none were given the maximum fine of $250. Collectively, the defendants were sentenced to 371 hours in jail—an average of 12 days per defendant— and all of it was suspended.
