A Green Line train headed toward Navy Yard separated today, and two of the train’s cars came apart by about 18 inches.

The incident occurred at 8:12 a.m. this morning, according to WMATA spokesperson Sherri Ly. “The train immediately came to a safe and complete stop, and the operator conducted an inspection,” Ly said.

After the conductor announced the separation, there was confusion among passengers, Darran Davis, who was aboard the train, told The Washington Post. “You heard people kind of muttering, ‘what? The train came apart? What’s going on?’” he said, adding that the abrupt halt lasted for about 10 to 15 minutes.

No injuries were reported, Ly said. And after the rail cars were re-coupled, the train moved into Navy Yard Station, which was a short distance away, and passengers transferred to another train, she said. The affected train is now out of service and will be inspected.
