As Mayor Muriel Bowser deploys extra snow plows for this weekend’s blizzard, many places are closing shop. While the March for Life-ers have vowed to go on, here’s a list of places that are closed and events that are cancelled this weekend. If you know of others, email us at tips@dcist.com.

Closings

  • All D.C. Public Library locations will be closed beginning at Friday at noon—they will remain closed on Saturday.
  • All scheduled weekend events at D.C. public schools are cancelled for Saturday and Sunday.
  • The city and federal government will close Friday at noon, except for essential personnel.
  • The National Sculpture Garden Ice Rink will close at 5 p.m. Friday—they will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday (Call other area ice rinks for their specifics).
  • All National Mall and Memorial Parks sites will close at noon on Friday and remain closed at least through Sunday.
  • The Smithsonian’s museums and the National Zoo are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
  • The Washington National Cathedral is closed Friday and Saturday.

Cancelled Events

  • Saturday’s DC Rollergirls bout is cancelled. Organizers are working to reschedule, and tickets for the doubleheader will be honored at the rescheduled date. If they are unable to reschedule, tickets will be refunded.
  • “Poets Unite!” at the National Portrait Gallery has been postponed to March 8.
  • MPD’s Crime Prevention Training (scheduled at Hemingway Baptist AME Church 501 P Street NW) is cancelled “until another day.”
  • The Washington Auto Show at the DC Convention Center will be closed through Sunday—organizers say discounts will be honored when re-opened (possibly Monday).
  • The performances of Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Octet at the BlackRock Center for the Arts have been rescheduled to February 19.
  • The Kennedy Center has cancelled all events and performances scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
  • Ford’s Theatre Society has canceled the Friday and Saturday performances of The Glass Menagerie. A decision about Sunday’s performance of The Glass Menagerie will be made by noon on Sunday. Also, Ford’s Theatre National Historic site will be closed to daytime visitors January 22-24.

Meanwhile, some places just don’t know yet. An employee from Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14 suggests calling before leaving home to see a flick. A Walmart employee (H St. NW location) says to do the same, or check their website.

All isn’t lost on getting out of the house, though, once snow (hopefully) stops falling on Sunday. Several groups are planning snowball fights, and WithLoveDC will host a “Silent Dance Party” at noon in Dupont Circle. Plus, restaurants around the city are ramping up food and drink discounts for the wintry weather.

But keep in mind that Metro service is suspended Saturday and Sunday. And if you really must drive somewhere, take note of where not to park.
