>> Tonight, the DC Music Salon will continue its series on local guitar legends. John Fahey was a towering figure in American roots music, having made a fundamental contribution to our understanding and appreciation of such music genres as Delta blues, Appalachian bluegrass, and New Orleans jazz. Tonight’s event at the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library will include a screening of In Search of Blind Joe Death, a documentary on Fahey. 7 p.m. Free.
>> Baltimore-based trumpeter Leo Maxey leads a group through two sets of gospel-infused jazz tonight at Twins Jazz. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Aaron Diehl is becoming a highly sought after pianist, having worked with Jazz at Lincoln Center, composer Philip Glass, and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. Diehl’s latest effort as a leader is Space, Time, Continuum, which showcases inter-generational collaborations. Diehl and his trio, featuring drummer Pete Van Nostrand and bassist Yasushi Nakamura, will play tunes from the album on Thursday at the Atlas. 8 p.m. Tickets $20-$28. CapitalBop will host a pre-concert discussion at 7 p.m. that is free for ticket holders.
>> Pianist Levon Mikaelian is an Armenian native whose band, United Shades of Artistry, fuses elements of modern jazz, rock, and Eastern European, Latin, and African music and rhythms.The ensemble includes guitarist John Lee, bassist Blake Meister, and Nigerian drummer Tosin Aribisala, and they will perform with Mikaelian on Thursday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 9:30 p.m. $10 at the door.
>> President’s Day weekend is upon us, so that means its time for the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival. Once again, Paul Carr and his team have put together an impressive lineup to fill the Rockville Hilton with music. As usual, the program includes competitions for school bands and jazz vocalists, local artists such as Iva Jean Ambush, Davey Yarborough, and Eric Byrd. Headliners include Terence Blanchard, Poncho Sanchez, and Kurt Elling.
>> The Jolley siblings make Jazz Night in Southwest a family affair as they pay tribute to their musical father. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.
>> Matthew Whitaker is an organist and at just 14-years old has played with the likes of Christian McBride and Roy Ayers. He’ll be at the Kennedy Center on Friday. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. Tickets $25.
>> Aaron “Ab” Abernathy graduated from Howard University’s prestigious jazz program and then went into the hip-hop realm to serve as music director for the underground hip-hop heavyweight, Black Milk. The pianist will return to his jazz roots on Friday to lead the Nat Turner Band at Bohemian Caverns. 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $25 to $77 (includes prix fixe dinner).
>> Helen Hayes-winner Julia Nixon, who was also in Broadway’s Dreamgirls, performs on Friday at AMP. 8 p.m. Tickets $25-$35.

>> The Whitfield Family Band is comprised of father Mark Whitfield and his sons, pianist Davis Whitfield and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. Along with bassist Yasushi Nakamura, they will play songs from their latest recording on Saturday at the Kennedy Center. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. Tickets $26-$39.

>> Four female voices—Amirtha Kidambi, Sarah Martin, Jean Carla Rodea and Kristin Slipp—will convene at Capital Fringe on Saturday to perform The Oversoul Manual, composer and saxophonist Darius Jones‘ ambitious a capella composition. The local husband and wife duo of vocalist Jessica Boykin-Settles and saxophonist Brian Settles open the show. 8 p.m. Tickets $10 in advance/$15 at the door.
