For years, D.C. residents only fantasized about riding the streetcar down the H Street corridor. But the trip will finally become a reality February 27, according to an announcement from Mayor Muriel Bowser yesterday. In honor of this feat, that’s been decades in the making, one illustrator has combined an image of D.C.’s streetcar with “another whimsical method of conveyance.”

Josh Kramer (who also writes food entries for DCist) has drawn inspiration from the “Catbus” featured in the1988 Japanese animation My Neighbor Totoro.

While the feline-shaped vehicle leaps in the air, balances on power lines, and traverses dirt roads, we can only hope that D.C.’s streetcar avoids minor collisions and catching on fire.

The streetcar’s operations kick off at 10 a.m. on opening day. “I can’t wait to ride it,” Kramer says. “Not only will it be convenient in my every day life, I just think its completion, after so many delays, will be really satisfying.”
