Virginia McLaurin, a 106-year-old District resident, showed just how much spunk she’s still got when she met the Obamas over the weekend. McLaurin visited the White House to celebrate Black History Month and danced her way to shake the hands of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

This introduction has been a long time coming for McLaurin, a South Carolina native who was born in 1909. In December 2014, she received a community service award for spending 40 hours per week helping students who have severe mental and physical disabilities. She received a standing ovation from the crowd as she accepted the award from then-Mayor Vincent Gray. In her remarks, she expressed her desire to meet the president.
She followed up her plea with a Youtube video, saying she’d never thought she’d live to see a president of color. “I pray for you every day of my life,” she said.
And upon meeting the Obamas, she responded to the president’s pleas to slow down with dancing and infectious joy. “I thought I would never live to get in the White House, and I tell you I am so happy,” she said. “A black president… A black wife… And I’m here to celebrate black history. That’s what I’m here for.”
