The severe thunderstorm from last night may be over, but that doesn’t mean we’re done with huge amounts of water just yet.

A manhole on 14th and K St. NW briefly became a geyser this morning.

“There was no break. We were doing a test shut on a water main and when they recharged the main, the valve at that location needed to be adjusted. Crew made the adjustment, geyser stopped, show ended,” says D.C. Water spokesperson John Lisle.

That’s not good news for everyone. Already, a petition sprung up to keep the geyser flowing. “The unexpected eruption of water from the ground at the intersection of 14th and K streets NW has significantly improved the aesthetics and enjoyment of an otherwise dreary and lifeless space.” So far it has two supporters.

Lisle says it’s too late now for the petitioners. “Unfortunately, I believe D.C.’s newest tourist attraction evaporated as quickly as it burst from the ground.”
