Red Line rains temporarily bypassed Metro’s Gallery Place station this afternoon as firefighters responded to a fire on the platform. But it didn’t appear to be a Metro malfunction.

“Apparently someone dripped a lit cigarette behind the parapet wall,” WMATA spokesman Dan Stessel said. D.C. Fire responded and extinguished the blaze in “five minutes at the most,” he said.

One person was transported to the hospital for observation or minor injuries, according to D.C. Fire spokesman Timothy Wilson.

Service is back to normal, but riders can expect residual delays.
