>> Last week, Bohemian Caverns announced the sad news that this iteration of the historic club will be shuttering its doors at the end of the month. The venue’s last weekend of performances begins on Thursday with guitarist Samir Moulay, who is also saying farewell to D.C. with these sets. >> Cellist Janel Leppin is best known for her experimental solo work and duo partnership with guitarist Anthony Pirog. She is unveiling a new project, Mellow Diamond, with an album release from her new label, Wedderburn Records. The album puts the sonic explorations of Leppin’s previous work into a dream pop context. The show takes place on Thursday at Songbyrd. Roz and the Rice Cakes and Pree open. 8:30 p.m. Tickets $10 in advance/$12 at the door.
>> Guitarist Kevin Eubanks is best known for his long-running stint as Jay Leno’s bandleader. He will bring a band to Blues Alley on Thursday for a four night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Marvin “Smitty” Smith, the drumming phenom who also played in The Tonight Show Band, will be a featured guest. Tickets $30-$35 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Calvin Jones was the long time director of UDC’s jazz program and he mentored many of the area’s best musicians. Jazz Night at Southwest will celebrate his legacy with a band comprised of some of D.C.’s best. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.
>> Malian singer/songwriter Rokia Traoré dismisses the notion of genre, effortlessly blending the sounds of Mali with blues, rock, jazz, and folk. She will play an 8 p.m. show on Friday at Lisner. Tickets $25-$45.
>> Kris Funn is a world class musician who has toured with the likes of Kenny Garrett and Christian Scott. His band, The Corner Store, will play 8 and 10 p.m. sets for Bohemian Caverns‘ penultimate night, a fitting choice given that he has probably played the cave as much as any local musician over the past decade. >> A group of experimental electronic musicians, including Evil Art Form, Pumpkin King, and others will be playing sets at 9:30 Club‘s Back Bar on Friday. 11 p.m. $5 at the door.
>> The Latin Grammy nominated Afro Bop Alliance will be at Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday for 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus food and drink minimum.
>> Mr. Henry’s hosts vocalists Aaron Myers (Friday) and Cecily (Saturday). 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.
>> Did we mention that we still haven’t gotten over the fact that Bohemian Caverns is closing? In what is sure to be a warm evening, Caverns owner Omrao Brown tapped his father, saxophonist Leonard Brown, to close out the club’s run. His band, Joyful Noise, will serve as a fitting celebration of the club’s legacy, and may even help wipe away some of the inevitable tears. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $18 in advance/$23 at the door.
>> Spring time marks the Hindu festival of Holi, which is in part celebrated by masses of people throwing colored powder at each other. Red Baraat has embarked on its annual Festival of Colors tour to add to the joy, and will bring it’s bhangra-meets-brass band sound to The Hamilton on Saturday. >> Thankfully, Transparent Productions has found a new home for its experimental Sundays @ 7 series after the closing of Bohemian Caverns. The Atlas will be home to this Sunday’s performance featuring Seattle-bred drummer Andrew Drury and his trio, Content Provider. 7 and 8:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 in advance/$20 at the door.
>> The DC Jazz Composers Collective was formed by saxophonist Bobby Muncy, bassist Kevin Pace, and pianist Gene D’Andrea.
