A woman has been driven to defend herself against tens of thousands of dollars in penalties after neglecting to pay toll fees on the Dulles Toll Road. Sara Hagarty racked up about $236 in unpaid fees (each ticket was $1 to $1.75), but with penalties and court costs, she’s being asked to pay $81,325, WTOP reports.

While the U.S. and Virginia constitutions forbid excessive fines, a Fairfax County circuit judge ruled that this upcharge doesn’t represent an unconstitutional burden.

Hagarty’s attorney, David Bernhard told WTOP that he’s also representing a driver who is appealing a fine of $1,000 for not paying a 55-cent toll in the Fairfax County HOV Lanes. That case will be dismissed, he said.

Hagarty will appear in court on May 31.
