>> Dave Chappell is one of the area’s most respected guitarists and is equally at home playing jazz or various styles of roots music. His band will play 8 and 10 p.m. sets tonight at Blues Alley. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Omara “Bombino” Moctar is a guitar hero for the 21st century. Coming out of the rich Tuareg tradition of North and West Africa, his music blends the soul and grooves of his heritage with the swagger of the best blues and rock. Bombino comes to The Hamilton tonight. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $20-$30.

>> Israeli Jazz pianist and composer Guy Mintus will lead his trio on Thursday at the Logan Fringe Arts Space. He has invited local artists, including Carnatic violinist Anjna Swaminathan and jazz trumpeter Nico Sarbanes to join him. 8 p.m. Free.

>> Miles Davis was certainly known for his innovative music, but none of his classic recordings would have reached such heights without the incredible musicians that played on them. Four generations of said artists gather at Blues Alley on Thursday to start a four night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Drummer Jimmy Cobb is the elder of a group that includes bassist Buster Williams, saxophonist Sonny Fortune, and guitarist Mike Stern. Tickets $35-$40 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Helen Sung won the 2007 Kennedy Center Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition and her career has been on the rise ever since. Her quintet will be at the Kennedy Center on Friday to play material from her new album, Anthem for a New Day. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. Tickets $39.

>> Alfredo Rodriguez has taken the jazz world by storm since moving to the U.S. from Cuba in 2009. Combining prodigious technique with deep knowledge of Cuban and jazz forms, he is on his way to becoming one of the great pianists. Rodriguez and his trio will play 7 and 9 p.m. sets at The Clarice on Friday. Tickets $10-$25.

>> The refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe inspired sitarist Anoushka Shankar‘s new album, Land of Gold. She assembled a new group of musicians for the recording and the ensemble will be at Lisner Auditorium on Friday. 8 p.m. Tickets $32-$55.

>> Ani Choying Drolma is a Nepalese Buddhist nun and musician. She is known throughout the world for bringing many Tibetan Buddhist chants and feast songs to mainstream audiences. She will perform at Lisner Auditorium on Saturday. 7 p.m. Tickets $35-$100.

>> Erkan Oğur is one of Turkey’s most celebrated musicians. He will perform in an intimate duo setting with vocalist İsmail Hakkı Demircioğlu on Sunday at the Logan Fringe Arts Space. 8 p.m. Tickets $25 in advance/$35 at the door.

>> Violinist Jason Kao Hwang will perform with his new group, Amygdala, on Sunday at the Atlas. The trio includes Rami Seo on gayageum, a Korean stringed instrument, and Michael Wimberly on African percussion. 8 p.m. Tickets $15 in advance/$20 at the door.

>> The NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert is usually held in New York, but on Monday it will be held at the Kennedy Center for the first time. The 2016 honorees include jazz advocate Wendy Oxenhorn, vibraphonist Gary Burton, as well as saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp. The performance features a who’s who of the jazz scene, with NEA Jazz Masters Chick Corea, Randy Weston, and Jimmy Heath all performing. The free tickets to the 8 p.m. show have already been distributed, but there will be a stand-by line and tickets that haven’t been picked up by 7:45 p.m. will be released to those in line.

>> PJ Morgan is an organist that is highly respected in the gospel world, and so that spirituality infuses his jazz playing. He will be celebrating the release of his new album at Blues Alley on Tuesday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
