After years of delay, College Park’s bikeshare program will launch today, giving commuters in the city 125 bicycles to cruise its suburban streets. The program, called mBike, will officially kick off at an event this afternoon at the University of Maryland, College Park with a ribbon cutting and inaugural ride with Mayor Patrick Wojahn.

Zagster, which provides turnkey bike sharing services in places like the Baltimore-Washington International Airport, is partnering with the city and college. The company will manage everything from the bikes and technology, to maintenance and marketing, according to a release.

Riders can pick up bikes at 14 stations, including several on the college campus. The incredibly flexible program allows people to sign up for daily, monthly, six-month, or yearly passes. For members, rides are free for the first hour, and three dollars each hour thereafter.

In 2014, city officials were working out a deal with Capital Bikeshare when the company that provides their equipment went out of business, stalling the system’s expansion. Although Capital Bikeshare has since said that, after two years, it is back to acquiring new bikes and docking stations, College Park chose to go another route.

Though the deal with Zagster originally called for installing 100 bikes, “the initial launch was increased due to increased demand,” according to a release, and city officials hope to extend the program throughout the region.
