The students of Brookland Middle School will have not one, but two special guests tomorrow—United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Ki-Moon is in town for the Climate Action 2016 summit, and will visit the school to see its sustainable features, including its green outdoor classroom, a solar learning station, geothermal heating and cooling system, exterior green wall, underground cisterns, rooftop solar array, and pervious pavers, according to a release from the mayor’s office.
Bowser and other city officials will brief Ki-Moon on the District’s environmental efforts, and there’ll be a question-and-answer session for students about green energy.
But will Bowser try to lobby the secretary-general on statehood while she’s got his ear? The mayor’s office has not returned a request for comment. DC Vote last year made the case that District disenfranchisement is a violation of the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals.
You’ll be able to watch the visit live on mayor.dc.gov/live.
