D.C. police arrested a woman this morning and charged her with three counts of cruelty to animals. Nearly a month ago, three pit bulls—Chase, Haagen Dazs, and Klondike—were taken from the custody of Brenda Bullock, of Northeast. At an animal hospital in Bowie, Md., veterinarians found that the four-month-old puppies were suffering from chronic medical conditions, according to a release from the Washington Humane Society.

Chase was “extremely emaciated and weak,” with low blood sugar, body temperature, and protein, as well as a massive skin infection. Unable to walk on his own, he stayed at the hospital to receive emergency care while authorities took his siblings to the Washington Humane Society’s adoption facility in Northeast.

While Chase was not initially expected to live, he pulled through after a blood transfusion and is now continuing treatment in a medical foster home. Klondike is also in foster care and Haagen Dazs has been adopted. The three puppies have received more than $9,000 in medical treatment combined.

“By the age of four months, Chase and his two siblings had experienced more suffering than any living being should be subjected to in a lifetime,” said Lisa LaFontaine of WHS/WARL. “Cruelty to animals in any form can never be tolerated and the people of our community should know that we will relentlessly pursue those that commit these crimes.”

For each count of animal cruelty, Bullock faces up to 180 days of jail time, or a fine of up to $250.
