A man drove onto the National Mall this afternoon and claimed he had been exposed to anthrax, causing street closures as police continue their investigations.

The unnamed man said he saw a substance on a field in Virginia. Believing it was a threat, he scoped it up and called the United States Capitol Police to warn of the danger. The US Park Police checked him for exposure. Though the test came back negative, the man and officers who made contact with him were all decontaminated.

The man was compliant and didn’t make any threats, Park Police said. Road closures around 3rd and Madison remain as police examine the truck.

“Together with DC Fire and EMS, the United States Capitol Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department, we are working to make sure that there is no threat to public safety,” UPP said in a statement.
