Vince Gray “has increased his commanding lead” in the race for the Ward 7 City Council seat—that is, according to the former mayor’s campaign. After reaching 268 voters in Ward 7, a survey conducted by the campaign found that Gray leads incumbent Yvette Alexander by 31 percentage points—Gray is at 53 percent and Alexander is at 22 percent.
The difference is two percentage points higher than another survey paid for by the Gray campaign in April. Today’s poll, conducted by The Contact Group, also showed that Delmar Chesley and Grant Thompson have the support of 3 percent of voters each, while 18 percent remain undecided.
Last month’s poll was conducted before the release of hundreds of pages of documents related to the shadow campaign surrounding Gray’s 2010 mayoral run. Those files, released in response to a request from the Washington Post, contain some new tidbits about the so-called shadow campaign but seem unlikely to derail Gray’s run.
And earlier this month Vernon Hawkins, a former campaign aide and adviser to Gray, was sentenced to six months in prison for his role in Gray’s “get out the vote” effort in 2010.
The results as generated by the vendor are below, however, the rest of the poll is part of another program that has sensitive data, and thus, the campaign “will not release [it] at this time,” according to Gray’s campaign treasurer Chuck Thies.
DCist has reached out to Alexander’s campaign for a response and will update if we hear back.
