After more than a decade of serving Scandinavian-Slavic comfort food in what was once a sit-down restaurant desert, Domku Cafe is closing its doors in Petworth. In a Facebook post, owner Kera Carpenter shared a sentiment that D.C. has grown accustomed to—the rent is too damn high. Her landlord was unwilling to negotiate down from a 66 percent increase in rent, the post reads.

Although closing at the end of June will be tough, Carpenter wrote, “I am also extremely proud of the role this business has played in the nearly 12 years of a changing Petworth. I am grateful for the many friends I’ve made here, honored to have been part of your lives, and privileged to have been accepted and supported by so many loyal customers.”She is inviting patrons to come by over the next few weeks “so that we can say our good-byes.”

Last November, Carpenter also closed Nurish Food + Drink, a sit down cafe at the Anacostia Arts Center that she opened nearly two years earlier.

And as for other endeavors, Carpenter told the Washington City Paper that she’s unsure if she’ll open another business in D.C. “I’m not really thinking anything other than I need to find a job,” she said.
