An 18-year-old has been arrested for groping a woman at a Metro station last night.

A woman was standing on the platform at L’Enfant Plaza last night around 11 p.m. when a man walking past grabbed her butt, according to Metro Transit Police. The victim and her boyfriend confronted the suspect, who attempted to run away. But they ran after him, yelling for police help. Multiple Metro Transit Police officers chased the suspect to the 500 block of C Street SW.

Jose Francisco Pleitez, of Lanham, has been charged with misdemeanor sexual abuse, Metro said. Police said other victims may have also been assaulted by Pleitez.

While sexual harassment on regional public transportation occurs at similar rates to the nation as a whole, riders are significantly more likely to face harassment on trains or in Metrorail stations than at a bus stop, according to Metro data.

Over the past few years, WMATA has launched several campaigns against harassment on the system. “Washington D.C. is doing the most of any transit system in the country to address this issue,” Holly Kearl, founder of Stop Street Harassment, told DCist earlier this year.

Metro Transit Police tracks all reports of sexual harassment, even if they’re not technically considered crimes. “Most of the incidents are simple assault, involving some sort of sexual touching or indecent exposure,” according to Metro spokesperson Morgan Dy.
