Update: Alexandria Police confirm that a shooting occurred, and left its victim—an adult male in his twenties—dead.

The schools have lifted their lock-in, meaning that people can enter and exit the buildings again.

“Police deemed there was no longer a threat,” says Helen Lloyd, APS spokesperson. Dismissal will happen at the normal time.

Original: Alexandria Public Schools are on lock-in following police activity in the area, according to an emergency announcement on school system’s website. The lock-in began at 12:44 p.m. this afternoon.

Crystal Nosal, a spokesperson for the Alexandria Police Department, did not have additional details about the incident.

During this lock-in, though, parents and caregivers are not receiving email and text updates through the emergency communication system because it’s undergoing routine maintenance.

“We have back-up notification and messaging systems,” like the city’s messaging system and individual school mailing lists, says Helen Llyod, spokesperson for APS.
