This weekend, expect Metrorail delays on all six lines, including work that is part of Metro’s SafeTrack plan.
In addition to the system closing at midnight every day of the week, WMATA has planned 15 “surges” of extended maintenance work over the course of the next year—the first of which is affecting Orange and Silver Line trains. On Monday—SafeTrack’s first weekday operation—Metro was “pretty much at the maximum of what we could move” on those lines, General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said that afternoon. Since then, roads have been especially congested and buses have been experiencing delays to boot.
SafeTrack’s first surge will continue this weekend (an on through June 16) with continuous single tracking on Orange and Silver Line trains, which are running every 18 minutes. Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow Line trains will run anywhere from 12 to 20 minutes until 10 p.m., at which time all trains will operate every 20 minutes.
As the region comes together to deal with it all, local governments, regional organizations, and private transit companies are trying to offer relief.
