A D.C. man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison today after admitting to killing his estranged wife. Michael Gayle, 35, strangled and stabbed 31-year-old Eboni Domally at her home in Southeast.

Domally’s son witnessed the incident, which took place in the early morning hours on June 29, 2014, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. The child ran to get help while two other children were also in the home at the time. Before officials arrived, Gayle left the residence where he once lived in the 5200 block of Queens Stroll Place SE. He moved out more than two months before the incident.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier spoke out days earlier about the increase in domestic violence homicides that year, asking women to seek help if they need it.

In April, Gayle pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in D.C. Superior Court. He was sentenced by Judge Lynn Leibovitz. When he’s released from prison, he’ll be placed under five years of supervision.
