A Metro Transit Police officer shot and killed a man on Monday night in Northeast D.C. near the Deanwood Metro station.

Police responded to a call around 11 p.m. last night in the 1300 block of 49th Street, according to a release from D.C. Police.

MPD says that Metro Transit officers were on the scene to investigate a large crowd setting off fireworks when they saw someone with a weapon. “The suspect fired multiple rounds at the officers before one of the officers discharged his service weapon striking the suspect,” according to the release.

After the shooting, the man was transported to the hospital and died. This is the first Metro Transit Police-involved shooting since March 2015, according to The Washington Post. D.C. Police fatally shot a man near Catholic University last week who allegedly raised a BB gun at officers.

D.C. Police has taken over the investigation, says spokesperson Aquita Brown, who did not provide any other details about the incident.

Nearby Deanwood Metro was the host of a number of violent incidents this spring, including a fatal shooting and a fatal stabbing.
