Update 2: Power to the area should be restored by noon tomorrow, Pepco said. The utility believes the outage was caused by an underground equipment failure that was unrelated to the heat.

Update 1: The closed museums—National Museum of African Art, Freer Sackler, the Hirshhorn, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Ripley Center—will remain shuttered for the rest of the day due to the power outage.

All of the museums unaffected by the SW power outage will keep their regular hours.

Original: Looking to beat the heat by going to a museum? Well, there are a few to avoid, at least for now, thanks to a Pepco outage in Southwest affecting all the museums on the south side of the Mall with the exception of the Smithsonian Castle and the Air and Space Museum.

That means that a scheduled gallery talk at the Hirshhorn has been postponed. The National Museum of African Art is also temporarily closed.

According to Pepco, crews are responding to the area.
