Did you have plans to check out a new beer garden this evening, or otherwise enjoy the outdoors? Might want to reconsider—D.C. is under a severe thunderstorm and flash flood watch.
This afternoon, the District has a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. The likelihood of a storm increases as evening hits, with an 80 percent chance of precipitation that could total between a quarter and half inch.
“Damaging winds are the primary threat. An isolated tornado is possible. Please clear drains and catch basins, and remove light objects from porches. Seek shelter in an inner most room or basement in case of a tornado,” says the D.C. alert.
Capital Weather Gang says heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds are the likely consequences of the storm, with a possibility of locally damaging winds, localized flash flooding, small hail, and isolated tornado. You know, just a little isolated tornado. Severe storms in D.C. have a habit of taking down trees (last week’s was no exception), so be careful out there.
The weather has led to postponements and closures.

Due to the weather, we are canceling tonight’s Summer Cinema Series movie at the DC Armory Mall. Stay tuned for a (literal) rain date.

The severe thunderstorm watch ends at midnight and the flash flood watch ends at 11 a.m. Friday, but the rain in the forecast doesn’t. The weekend snapshot from NWS looks inspired by Zeus. May we recommend some good films and theater to check out?
Updated with flash flood watch and closures.
