Metrorail delays are taking place on all six lines this weekend. Red Line trains will operate every 8 to 16 minutes. Orange, Silver, and Blue Line trains will run every 18 minutes. And Yellow and Green Line trains will operate every 12 to 15 minutes. Metrorail is on the last stretch of SafeTrack’s fifth surge, which entails continuous single tracking between Vienna and Ballston, impacting the Orange and Silver lines; it ends on Sunday. After that, a surge will come for the Red Line for the first time.
As the yearlong maintenance plan continues, Metro General Manager Wiedefeld said yesterday that he plans to propose permanent midnight closures on Fridays and Saturdays and a 10 p.m. closing time on Sundays “to support long-term maintenance strategy.” Prior to SafeTrack, Metro stayed open until 3 a.m. on weekends; the system currently closes at midnight every night of the week.
