D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton advocated for statehood during her address to the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday evening and pointed out Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s pledged support for making the District the 51st star on the flag.
“We are home to our most powerful institutions, yet we have been denied our power as American citizens,” she said. “The power we seek is ordinary, not lofty. It is the power of equal citizenship.”
She noted that the District struggles against Republicans who seek to eliminate gun laws and otherwise meddle in local policies.
The Democratic National Platform includes support for D.C. statehood and Clinton has promised to be a “vocal champion for D.C. statehood.” (The Republican National Platform … not so much.)
“Never before has a presidential nominee taken office with so solid a promise for full and equal citizenship for D.C. residents,” Norton said. “A nominee who will stand up for D.C. will stand up for you, too.”
Norton endorsed Clinton before the D.C. primary and appeared with her and Mayor Muriel Bowser in Shaw.
Bowser, who also attended the Republican National Convention, used her opportunity at the mic at the DNC to draw attention to statehood.
“Madam secretary, I’m the mayor of the District of Columbia, the best city in the world and soon to be the 51st state in our great union,” Bowser said while officially casting the D.C. delegate votes on Tuesday. “We are 670,000 taxpaying Americans just like you, and with statehood, and only with statehood, will we have votes in Congress just like you.”
