This morning’s derailment will continue to affect Silver and Orange line service through Saturday Sunday.
Around 6:15 a.m., two cars of a Wiehle-bound Silver Line train derailed near the East Falls Church station. Metro evacuated 75 passengers, shut down the station, and suspended service between West Falls Church and Ballston on the Orange Line and between Ballston and McLean on the Silver Line.
The fourth and fifth cars jumped the tracks shortly after the operator switched from one track to another on the approach to East Falls Church.
One injury was reported, a man who was taken to the hospital for a non-life-threatening head injury, according to the transit agency.
Metro is going through “protocol where we are examining every possible factor of this from operator to track condition to everything,” Wiedefeld said at a press conference this morning. “We’re not going to assume anything until we get through that.” However, he did add that the derailment occurred “totally outside” of the current SafeTrack zone and not in an area that was worked on in a previous surge.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Transit Administration have been notified of the incident.
The tracks, switch, third-rail infrastructure, and railcars all have significant damage, according to Metro. Because the derailment occurred in a narrow space in the I-66 median, workers will need to use special equipment to clear the scene. Once the railcars are removed, they can figure out how much work is needed to get the area back up and running.
In the meantime, free shuttle buses will serve the Ballston, East Falls Church, West Falls Church, and McLean stations.
During tonight’s rush hour, the Orange Line will have 12-minute headways on both sides of the bifurcated tracks, between Vienna and West Falls Church and between Ballston and New Carrollton. The same will be true of the Silver line, which will run every 12 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and McLean and between Ballston and Largo Town Center. All D.C. travelers going west should board Orange and Silver line trains regardless of their final destination since all trains will stop at Ballston; riders will need to take a shuttle from there.
And throughout the rest of the weekend, there is also regularly scheduled work and the effects of Surge 5.
