Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine has been accused of being boring (Hillary Clinton told CBS “I love that about him”) but now, it’s that very essence of “blah” that has become its own caricature.
On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, comedian John Oliver called the Virginia senator “America’s stepdad” and “a tall glass of Lactaid.”
To be fair, Kaine (“no, no, call me Tim”) is a known harmonica shredder with his band The Jugbusters. He carries around not one, but four of the instruments on his person at any given time. His convention speech was full of folksy phrasing and a very bad, dad-like impression of Donald Trump.
When Kaine went on CNN’s New Day, host Alisyn Camerota read him tweets like “Tim Kaine wants to you wait an hour after eating before you go swimming” to see his reaction.
Kaine said that one of his sons sent him some of the Daddy Kaine tweets after his Democratic National Convention speech on Wednesday. “We fell asleep at 2:30 in the morning just laughing hysterically,” he said with a chuckle. 2:30 a.m.?!? Wow, pretty edgy.
“I guess I’ve got to acknowledge I do have a slightly goofy quality,” he continued. “Some find it endearing and some find it annoying. I can’t make myself do it or undo it, it’s just kind of who I am. That others picked up on it and are, kind of, ribbing me about it, I don’t think that’s all bad.”
That’s right Daddy Kaine, we’re all giving you a good ribbing. It’s not over yet, either. “You’ll probably see a lot more of it from here to November 8 and beyond,” he said.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, confusion remains about Kaine’s position on the Hyde Amendment, which prevents the government from using federal dollars for abortion. He told Camerota that “I have been for the Hyde Amendment, I haven’t changed my position on that,” despite reports earlier this week that he privately told Clinton he would support the measure’s repeal. The amendment has a special impact on D.C.
C’mon Dad, get it together.
