Two athletes from the D.C. area claimed gold medals yesterday at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Michael Phelps placed first in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. This makes the 19th gold medal, and 23rd overall for the Baltimore-bred swimmer.

And Katie Ledecky, who was born in D.C. and raised in Bethesda, finished first while beating her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle. She finished in 3 minutes, 56:46 seconds—four seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Jazz Carlin, and two seconds ahead of her previous mark. Already a gold medalist from her appearance at the 2012 Olympics, when she was only 15, Ledecky also earned a silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle relay for Team USA in Rio.

Meanwhile, Gabby Douglas finished third behind American teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman. In 2012, the then 16-year-old Virginia Beach native became the first American woman to win the Olympic gold medal in both the team and individual all-around gymnastics competition in London. Unfortunately, she won’t be able to defend her 2012 gold because gymnastics rules dictate that each country can only have two competitors in Thursday’s all-around final. “I’m not disappointed at all,” the 20-year-old champion told the Associated Press. “I have no regrets.”

The D.C. region is being represented by more than two dozen athletes in the games. The opening ceremony was last week, and many Districts restaurants and bars have been offering specials ever since.
