Metrorail riders should expect delays and interruptions on four lines this weekend.

Red Line trains will run every 8 to 15 minutes. Since Tuesday, the line has been impacted by SafeTrack’s seventh surge, which Metro has modified to include a total shutdown between Grosvenor and Shady Grove stations this weekend. Orange and Blue Lines will be single tracking and running every 20 minutes. And the Silver Line will operate every 10 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only.

Green and Yellow Line trains will be on a regular weekend schedule.

In addition to the seventh surge’s revision, Metro GM Paul Wiedefeld announced yesterday that he’s considering adding more weekend shutdowns to the yearlong maintenance program. If he does make the changes, Wiedefeld promised to give riders and jurisdictions warning. He also said that the 10 months of 24/7 track work may also be extended.

This news comes in the wake of a derailment that sent two railcars off the tracks, likely due to deteriorated rail infrastructure.

Red Line

Buses replace trains between Shady Grove and Grosvenor and single tracking between Forest Glen & Glenmont | 7 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday

From 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday, buses will replace Red Line trains between Shady Grove and Grosvenor stations.

Free shuttle buses will operate between Shady Grove and Grosvenor making intermediate stops at Rockville, Twinbrook and White Flint. Please allow 15 minutes of travel time for each station stop.

Stations Closed: Shady Grove, Rockville, Twinbrook, and White Flint
Red Line trains will operate:

• Between Grosvenor & Glenmont every 15 minutes.
• Between Grosvenor & Silver Spring every 8 minutes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Orange Line

Trains every 20 minutes | 10:00 p.m. Friday through closing Sunday

Single tracking between McPherson Square & Smithsonian to allow for rail and fastener renewal, cover board replacement, grout pad maintenance and joint elimination.

Silver Line

Trains every 10 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East & Ballston | 10:00 p.m. Friday through closing Sunday

Silver Line trains will operate every 10 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only. Customers traveling to/from other stations should use Orange and/or Blue line trains to complete their trip. At Ballston, transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same platform.

Blue Line

Trains every 20 minutes | 10:00 p.m. Friday through closing Sunday

Single tracking Stadium-Armory to Addison Road to allow for radio cable installation, rail, fastener and stud renewal.
