Update: Metro officials say that Rhode Island Avenue Metro station will be closed through Sunday as the top-to-bottom inspection continues.

The station, which has been closed since Thursday evening, is expected to reopen on Monday at 7 a.m.

Original: Rhode Island Avenue Metro station is closed at least through the end of today. Officials are investigating two incidents in which debris fell from the station’s ceiling and onto its lower level, according to a Metro release.

The first incident, which involved small pieces of concrete and a metal bracket, took place on Wednesday. Crews made repairs overnight, and the station opened on Thursday. But on Thursday evening small pieces of concrete fell again, about twenty feet away from the previous incident.

No injuries were reported. Red Line trains bypassed Rhode Island Station for the rest of last night as a “precaution.”

So far, the cases “do not appear to be related to any structural deficiencies,” according to Metro. However, an outside firm will perform a top-to-bottom inspection to make sure that “the structure is sound and does not present a hazard to the riding public.”

Riders can take free shuttle buses between Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations.
