Original: Units from D.C. Police and D.C. Fire and EMS are responding to a 911 call reporting a hand grenade on a park bench in Tenleytown.
The call, which came in at 1:43 p.m., was “for something that looked like a grenade” on the 4600 block of 40th Street NW, says Doug Buchanan, a spokesperson for D.C. Fire and EMS. FEMS is sending three units to investigate the scene.
“We have not deemed it real or not yet,” Buchanan says.
MPD is also responding with its explosive ordnance disposal team, confirms spokesperson Aquita Brown. “We’re still on the scene investigating,” Brown says.
Police are asking people to stay away from Fort Reno Park as they investigate the “suspicious item.”
In the meantime, nearby schools are sheltering in place, NBC 4 reports.
