A man was struck and killed by a U-Haul truck early this morning in Northeast. The incident took place at 4th Street and New York Avenue around 12:15 a.m., according to Aquita Brown, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department.
The U-Haul driver was traveling westbound on New York Avenue. As the truck crossed the intersection of 4th Street, it hit the pedestrian, who was in the travel lane. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The two roads were shut down for about four hours, D.C. Police Traffic tweeted. The driver stayed on the scene, Brown says, and the case remains under investigation.
MPD data shows that there have been 23 traffic fatalities this year compared to 20 cases this time last year. In December, Mayor Muriel Bowser released an action plan to bring the Swedish concept of Vision Zero to D.C. in order to reach zero traffic-related deaths or injuries by 2024.
