On World AIDS Day, 10 protesters were arrested this afternoon near House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office as they protested funding cuts to programs related to HIV/AIDs, or what they called an “AIDs nightmare budget”.
They were charged with “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding” outside room 1233 in the Longworth Building, according to U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Eva Malecki. As of 2:30 p.m., the protesters were being processed.
President-elect Donald Trump recently announced Georgia Representative Tom Price as his Health and Human Services Secretary pick. Price has lead the charge in the House to gut the Affordable Care Act and put forward a replacement plan that Democrats say would lead to drastic Medicare cuts and decreased healthcare access for all but the richest of Americans.
The protesters came out to urge Ryan not to gut Obamacare, Medicare, and Medicaid. “Paul Ryan, don’t you dare, privatize our health care,” the protesters shouted outside his office after it was clear that the House speaker wouldn’t meet with them.
They also demanded that the federal government keep funding for global HIV/AIDs treatment and prevention programs, like the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. “We’re tired of begging for crumbs. They can do this and must do this,” said Asia Russell, the executive director of Health Global Access Project (Health GAP).
