The former House speaker is leaving his Wisconsin homeland behind despite an apparent disdain for the Washington elite.
“This vote is a down payment for full voting rights to the more than 680,000 American citizens residing in the District of Columbia,” said Holmes Norton in her prepared remarks.
“People of my race were once punished with lashes and worse for learning to read,” Hayden said. “To now have an opportunity to serve and lead the institution that is the national symbol of knowledge is a historic moment.”
