Who would let a “dense, masticated lemon-sized mass of bamboo” get in their way? Not panda toddler Bei Bei!

Starting today, the Panda House at the National Zoo is once again open, after Bei Bei’s emergency surgery prompted its closure the day after Thanksgiving.

Zookeepers noticed that Bei Bei was not eating, sleeping more than usual, and acting nauseated on Thanksgiving. After an ultrasound showed the bamboo blockage in his small intestine, a volunteer veterinary surgeon performed the “life-saving surgery.”

Now fully recovered, though still eating soft foods, Bei Bei is back on view for visitors and on the Panda Cam.

While the Panda House was closed, other pandas Bao Bao, Mei Xiang, and Tian Tian were still viewable in their outdoor yards. Bao Bao is leaving D.C. soon—she’ll be shipped to China in early 2017 per the National Zoo’s agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association.

The Panda House’s hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
