Nearly 2,000 people have said they’ll be going to Comet Ping Pong on Friday to support the pizzeria, but now the business has launched an online fundraising page for those further afoot looking for ways to show their appreciation.
“Comet Ping Pong is overwhelmed by the incredible love and compassion that has been directed toward us and our community,” reads the GoFundMe page. “Many friends, including those in other places, have asked how they can support us and our staff besides drinking and eating pizza at Comet Ping Pong.”
The business has been beset with threats and harassment as the result of a false online conspiracy theory that alleges the building’s nonexistent basement is the site of a Satanic child sex ring run by Hillary Clinton.
Those seemingly laughable claims had serious consequences when Edgar Maddison Welch entered the pizzeria with an assault rifle on Sunday afternoon. He told police he had “read online that the Comet restaurant was harboring child sex slaves and that he wanted to see for himself if they were there … [He] stated he was armed to help rescue them.”
The page has a goal of $28,000, which would go towards paid security staffers and a security upgrade, physical damage (the police report indicated that Welch caused at least $1,000 in damages to the restaurant when he fired his gun), and wage compensation for staffers. The business was closed Monday, and reopened on Tuesday.
