“People from every corner of the country have expressed great interest in President-elect Trump’s inauguration and look forward to continuing a salute to our republic that spans more than two centuries,” said Presidential Inaugural Committee CEO Sara Armstrong in a statement alongside a release of the initial list of participants in Donald Trump’s inaugural parade.

But the list itself includes participants from less than half of the 50 states. The 40 groups who will march down Pennsylvania Avenue come from 21 states, in addition to national groups like the Boy Scouts of America and Wounded Warriors. The release says that the PIC may announce more participants later.

While Virginia has four groups that’ll be marching, including one from Arlington and another from Fort Myer, neither D.C. or Maryland have folks on the list. NBC 4 reported last month that no D.C.-area marching bands had applied to participate.

In 2013, for the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, 60 organizations marched, selected from an application pool of 2,807. We’ve reached out to the PIC for the number of applications received this year, and will update if we hear back.

In an interview with Breitbart, Alex Stroman, the PIC’s deputy director of communication, said that fewer participants in the parade was by design. “This is going to be a shorter parade, an hour to hour and a half or so, so [Trump] can go to work.”

This year’s PIC has reportedly had trouble securing A-list celebrities for events throughout the inaugural weekend, though the president-elect claimed on Twitter that the opposite was true.

The narrative that the 58th inauguration is pared down so that the next president can focus on policy wasn’t what transition team members were saying right after the election.

“The inauguration is going to be huge,” Omarosa Manigault, transition team member and former Apprentice contestant, told The Hollywood Reporter in early December. “Of course, Mr. Trump wants it blinged out and fabulous and glamorous.”
