The Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER) Coalition officially has its perch along the inauguration parade route to protest Donald Trump.
The group will be located on the north end of Freedom Plaza, on the west side of 14th Street, where organizers plan to set up a stage and sound equipment.
While others plan to disrupt Donald’s day with blockades or clouds of marijuana smoke, the prolific anti-war protesters say they’re sticking to legally and very visibly demonstrating along the parade.
“It’s our political position that Trump doesn’t mind if we go anywhere other than the parade route,” says Yasmina Mrabet, an organizer with the ANSWER Coalition. “We want everyone to come together and be visible along the parade route in the eyes of the national and international media.”
The group was always planning to be out protesting on January 20, regardless of who won, but organizers seen a surge of interest after the surprising outcome.
“I think it still would have been a sizable demonstration” if Clinton had won, Mrabet says. “But in speaking to organizers who were involved in previous protests against the Bush administration, they’ve all said they’ve not see anything like this.”
More than 20,000 people have RSVP’ed online. Squeezing even a fraction of that into the space around Freedom Plaza will be difficult and Mrabet says they’re in talks with the NPS about other spaces around the route where they may also be able to position themselves.
The permit predates the inauguration and actually began in mid-December and runs through January 27, according to National Parks Service spokesman Mike Litterst. NPS issued several other permits today for inauguration day activities, including one for the American Constitution Society, Litterst says. They don’t yet have a timeline for all the permits to be processed.
