WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4

Organist Bill Heid leads his band at Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Miramar uses the traditional instrumentation of organ, piano, guitar, bass, and percussion to explore the nuance within Puerto Rico’s bolero tradition. The band will be at The Hill Center tonight as part of the venue’s international music series. 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets $15.

Tap dance and jazz are very much entwined art forms in that they share connected histories. Savion Glover is today’s most celebrated tap dancer and the award winning performer behind Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk will be at The Howard Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday. 8 p.m. Tickets $37.50-$77.50.

Trumpeter Aidan Lombard was a semi-finalist in the 2014 edition of the prestigious Monk Competition. He will lead a band through 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 5

The Ladybugs is a traditional jazz vocal group whose repertoire includes favorites from the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, infused with swing, country, blues, and Latin music.The band plays a free 6 p.m. set on the Millennium Stage.

Blues guitarist James Terrell plays Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

Guitarist Chris Thomas King is best known for the Robert Johnson-esque character he portrayed in the hit Coen Brother’s film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? While that role recreated a certain place and time, he has devoted his career to bringing the blues into the 21st century. King will bring his contemporary sound to Blues Alley on Thursday for a four-night stand of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $22.50-$27.50 plus minimum and surcharge.

The Twins Jazz Orchestra plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at its namesake club. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

Dos Santos: Anti-Beat Orquestra draws from a number of Latin American dance styles to re-create the atmosphere of sweaty clubs that permeated South and Central America through the ’70s and ’80s. The group will share a bill with Los Sadicos at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 9:30 p.m. $10 at the door.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 6

Saxophonist Tedd Baker leads some of the area’s best on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. The band includes pianist Janelle Gill, bassist Kris Funn, and other D.C. stalwarts. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Bassist Kenny Wright leads a group at Mr. Henry’s. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

Arlington’s Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ has a Sunday recital series and this week’s concert features two of the area’s best performing in an intimate duo setting. Pianist Tim Whalen and bassist Zack Pride will perform original compositions and arrangements from the Great American Songbook. 3 to 4:30 p.m. Free.

Nashville-based artist Kandace Springs has been critically praised for her blend of jazz and soul music. She will perform at 6 p.m. on the Millennium Stage.

Guitarist Jack Waugh is just twenty years old but has a surprising amount of experience under his belt. As with many artists coming up today, his music reflects the fact that genres are becoming increasingly blurred. Waugh’s trio plays an 7 p.m. set at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. The club’s late set features Azul, a local group that plays music from all over the Mediterranean region. 9 p.m. $5 at the door.
