TUESDAY, JANUARY 17

DYSTOPIAN FILM: Black Cat screens dystopian films for the second night in a row. Tonight’s showings will include Persepolis and Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. (Black Cat, 7 p.m. FREE)
EFFECTIVE PROTEST: If you’re planning on joining any protests this weekend, you might want to take some time beforehand to gather with your fellow activists to discuss peaceful and effective protest. This Post-Election Discussion Group will cover questions including, “Are public demonstrations effective?” and “What are the logistics of the various marches and protests on January 21st?” (Upshur Street Books, 7-9 p.m. FREE)

GOURMET SYMPHONY: Gourmet Symphony’s culinary-inspired music programming makes its way to the Columbia Firehouse. Guests will enjoy dishes and drinks inspired by cuisine from throughout the country while musicians from Inscape Chamber Orchestra performs music from John Harbison’s Songs America Loves to Sing. BYOB: Leave the booze at home, this is a “Bring Your Own Books” event. Bring your own book to Hooray For Books in Old Town Alexandria for an adult book swap. Refreshments will be provided. SKI TRIPS: Stop by The North Face/Sourced Adventures Launch Party to learn about Sourced Adventures’ upcoming ski trips to Whitetail Resort, departing from The North Face Georgetown every week through April. Guests can expect giveaways, drinks, and raffles. (The North Face, 7-9 p.m. FREE)
LIVE FILM SERIES: Robin Bell and Verses Records present Directed Actions: Live Film Series. The four nights of events will consist of short films, discussions, and live music with the goal of bringing together filmmakers and storytellers to explore their work. THURSDAY, JANUARY 19
ADULT COLORING: It’s not really adult coloring until you add free wine, right? If you don’t find the act of coloring relaxing enough, East City Bookshop is hosting an adult coloring night, where every colorer will be able to relax with a free glass of wine. Bring your own coloring materials, or borrow or buy them from East City Bookshop. (6-8 p.m. FREE)
COMEDY: Daniel Sloss, one of the UK’s fastest rising comedy stars, stops by Drafthouse Comedy before heading to LA later this week. If you won’t get offended by religious jokes, watch this clip to see what you’re in for. (Drafthouse Comedy, 7 p.m. $20)
COMEDY FESTIVAL: What A Joke is a nationwide comedy festival happening in 33 cities, with proceeds benefiting the The ACLU.
